Contemporary Fine Artist and Creative Facilitator in Arts in Health

I’m a Wales-based artist working across contemporary painting, creative facilitation and reflective writing. My paintings begin outdoors, in the weather and light of the Welsh coast and hills, and are made in the studio from memory, sketches and instinct: layers of paint, pencil and gold leaf, sanded back until the surface holds the feeling of a place rather than its likeness.

I trained at Central Saint Martins and hold an MA (Distinction) from the University of South Wales, where I currently teach on the Masters Arts in Health course. My paintings are held in public and private collections, including the National Contemporary Art Gallery for Wales (Celf ar y Cyd) and USW City Campus.

Painting

I’m interested in the experience of being in a place more than its literal appearance: the shimmer of sea, the warmth of midsummer light, the colours that remain after the moment has passed. I sketch outdoors and work from those drawings, not from photographs. Back in the studio I often begin with only an intention, pushing paint around until an image emerges. The process is intuitive, but it rests on drawing skills and a clear framework, and over time it has become a felt sense of knowing when to stop.

Creativity and change

My painting runs alongside my teaching and facilitation, and each feeds the other. After more than 30 years of professional practice, I’ve found that creativity is a skill and a practice, one that helps us slow down, listen more carefully and reconnect with ourselves and with others.

I’m particularly interested in working with people who carry a quiet belief that they are “not creative”, and in creating spaces where old habits can be questioned and softened. Working creatively in community matters to me, and I’m part of an artist collective, Das Clarks.
